It’s now March, and it’s fairly safe to say that your resolutions for 2018 have already gone out the window. If not, congratulations! This is because approximately 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. I know it seems a bit late for motivational speeches, but put your skepticism on hold if you can. What if I told you that there is still one critically important resolution that you can keep for 2018? One with both clinically-proven physical and mental health benefits?
Time, as we perceive it, is largely a construct of our minds. In order to keep a schedule, we divide time into manageable periods such as hours, weeks or months. When we do this, we unwittingly assign value to these time periods. These benchmarks are useful when setting goals, but why must we wait for a new week or a new year to start again? This thought process is exactly why New Year’s resolutions fail. When we inevitably fail in pursuit of one of our goals, we feel like we must wait until the next arbitrary time period begins before we can start over. Sleep better – yes, it really is that simple. Sleep is immensely important, and here in America we have a sleep problem. Problem #1 is that many of us simply aren’t getting enough of it. Click To Tweet
Why Sleep Matters
Sleep is immensely important, and here in America we have a sleep problem. Problem #1 is that many of us simply aren’t getting enough of it. According to a recent Gallup poll, American adults average less than the 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night recommended by the experts at the National Sleep Foundation. Problem #2 is that the sleep that we do get is often poor quality for a variety of reasons. Multiple studies, like this study from the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard University Medical School, have determined that when our bodies get a sufficient amount of quality sleep, our brains show remarkable improvement in the areas of memory function and in the learning of new information. In contrast, sleep deprivation can lead to a host of health issues ranging from mood swings and impaired judgement, to heart disease, diabetes, reduced immune system function and even premature death. That’s not even taking into account seemingly “minor” symptoms like reduced work performance and alertness. Did you know that it was determined by investigators that sleep-deprived workers and long shifts played a key role in both the Chernobyl and Three Mile Island nuclear reactor accidents? You and I may not work at a nuclear power plant, but that doesn’t make sleep deprivation any less serious an issue.
But There’s Good News…
We can help you sleep better for the duration of 2018. And this perfect, easy resolution doesn’t even require an accountability partner! Research suggests that most sleepers wait far too long to replace their mattresses, only doing so when their current mattress becomes absolutely unbearable. Please don’t fall into this trap. A survey in the U.K. even found that some respondents were still sleeping on 40 year-old mattresses! Modern mattresses are designed to be replaced every 8 years. Sleeping on an old, unsupportive, or worn-out mattress can contribute to all the negative symptoms we discussed above – and more.
Do a quick self-evaluation to ensure your mattress will provide you with quality, restful sleep in the coming year. Do you have trouble sleeping through the night? Is your mattress approaching the 8 year mark? Do you often wake up with a sore or stiff back? Have you experienced sciatic nerve pain or numbness in your arms, back or legs? Is your mattress too firm or too soft? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, a new mattress may help deliver the quality sleep you missed out on in 2017.
